22. In Search of an Adventure

I had hardly taken a sip of my first cup of coffee when the one who wants me to be fit enough to compete in the Olympics walks in and sits in front of me and announces, “Guess what, I just had a great idea.”

Now you will appreciate that at seven in the morning, the brain of any reasonable person is just beginning to limber up and one is gently whispering to the clouds in one’s coffee, ‘Good Morning.’ To jump out of one’s chair, shouting, ‘I just had a great idea,’ is not only hard for one to believe, but is rather uncivilized, don’t you agree? I see, you can’t answer because someone is around. That’s okay.

“Two other ladies and I are planning to drive through the middle of the world’s harshest and most treacherous desert and we need you in case the truck gets stuck in sand. What do you say? It would be so much fun, what an adventure.”

Right. You know what I was thinking at this moment so I won’t mention it here. However, with the grace of God I had an excuse, a damn good one to boot, as I answered with sorrowful eyes (I was pretending, okay?), “Honey, I have to go on a business trip to Sana’a in Yemen this week. I am so sorry. But you girls should go. And don’t worry about the truck; it won’t get stuck. They are built for that sort of thing. Just stay on compact sand trails and don’t climb too many steep dunes.”

Without probing further (or wasting time, as she would put it), she reluctantly agreed to go on without me. Although I was half-hearted before about going on a business trip to Yemen (because of the constant danger of people being kidnapped or shot at), now I was determined to go. I’d rather face bullets than…never mind. Digging a truck out of sand under the hot Arabian sun just didn’t appeal to my sensibilities. You know what I mean.

So, the following Saturday (the first day of an Arabian week), as my lady and her friends in their khakis set off to answer the call of the desolate desert, I took a flight out to Sana’a. Upon arrival in Sana’a I discovered that my Vice President from Canada had cancelled the meeting due to some sudden and mysterious illness. Chickening out, more like it, I thought. Smart man. But now the dilemma I faced was where to go for the next three to four days. It was simply too dangerous to venture outside the hotel and staying there for four days was, well, rather dull. I daren’t return back home too quickly in case my lady had postponed her visit by a day or so; besides, I would feel guilty sitting at home gulping down chilled beer while I had told her I wouldn’t be there.

An amazing thought occurred to me (it is known to happen now and then). I wondered if I should try on my own to go on an adventure trip.
